Groundbreaking or light-minded? The youth of the church seem to pick choice number one, claiming the soundtrack to The Singles Ward finally pricks their musical hearts in a way traditional hymn collection can't. If you keep the songs in the context of being background music for the first full-length feature film by Mormons spoofing Mormons, it's easier not to raise a finger in contempt. Still, how would most mothers react when hearing a grunge version of "Book of Mormon Stories"? At the CD's defense, only the most stone-faced party pooper could keep from cracking a grin when hearing most of these tunes. More than one listener will picture flower children harmonizing on the hippie-tainted version of "There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today." And Jamen Brooks sounds like a reincarnation of the Lemonheads' Evan Dando when he sings "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." Some songs make you wonder if the true spirit of the song is overpowered by guitar crunch. Whereas two or three songs tiptoe across the reverence line, "When Grandpa Comes" leaps noticeably across to the wrong side. The parents who can come to terms with the rest of the album likely don't appreciate the pointed disrespect for the elderly. It's undeniable; still, you'll want to like this album, which helps to forgive the pockets of light-mindedness.
